The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), in the College of Engineering at UC Davis, invites candidates for a tenure-track/tenured Assistant or Associate Professor in Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging faculty position. The resulting hire will not be made above the associate rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
Candidates should have an existing track record in Biophotonics, specifically in Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging, and be open to collaborative studies with faculty and scientists at the UC Davis Medical Center, as well as the newly established National Center for Interventional Biophotonic Technologies funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The expectation will be to build an internationally successful and interdisciplinary research program, be active in acquiring extramural funding, participate in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate level, and be willing to help establish an innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum in the field of medical Biophotonics.
To be considered for an appointment to the Associate Professor rank, candidates should have a commensurate record of scholarly accomplishments, teaching experience, and a sustained externally funded research program. Preference will be given to candidates that can demonstrate a commitment to collaboration in their previous research program, in particular with clinical departments and the medical imaging community.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate a history of successful, team-based research, interaction with faculty, students, and other scientists from diverse backgrounds. In addition, the research program of successful candidates is expected to integrate various campus strengths (e.g., of the School of Medicine, the School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research).
The Department of Biomedical Engineering consists of the Department Chair, 1-2 Vice-Chairs, 36 ladder rank faculty (including WOS), approximately 115-120 other academic employees of varying titles, and 24 administrative and technical staff. The Department has ~550 undergraduate students enrolled, which have ABET accreditation status. The Department houses one graduate group with approximately 120 graduate students who can obtain a MS and/or PhD degree, as well as an integrated BS/MS program. The Department is responsible for oversight of CMGI research center and the new TEAM facilities and development activities. The current budget research funding level is in excess of $77 million (with an expenditure rate of about $19.7M). Biomedical Engineering has significant federal research funding (NIH, NSF, DOD, DOE) within the College of Engineering. The Department occupies 40,000 square feet of departmentally assigned space within a Garamendi Facility and 3 other buildings on campus.
The Department has 33 faculty members and is ranked 7th in the nation and 2nd in California in annual research expenditures (NSF rankings). The Department has existing strengths in the areas of tissue eng...ineering, cellular and molecular engineering, biomechanics, biomedical imaging, micro/nano systems, therapeutics, and computational/systems biology.
