Emory University seeks the inaugural Director for the Center for Artificial Intelligence Learning (CAIL). This is a director level position with a special emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the world. It is transforming technology, healthcare, business, the arts, and humanities. AI is also revealing and creating novel ethical and legal challenges as it develops. It is changing how people work and how people learn. CAIL aims to infuse AI throughout the university’s educational and research missions. It will ensure that Emory University is a world leader in AI training and application for years to come.
Emory and Atlanta are home to a broad range of AI work. The Director will enter an existing community with the task of deepening its ties and helping it grow—and growth is on the horizon. Through its AI.Humanity Initiative https://aihumanity.emory.edu/ 20+ new AI faculty have been hired in these first 12 months. Over the next several years, Emory is committed to recruiting and hiring forty to fifty additional AI researchers across the university. The University features a large and well-integrated Center for Ethics (https://ethics.emory.edu/) that brings together ethics scholars from around campus, including some already working in AI ethics, while significant thrusts in AI Health, AI Business, and AI Law continue to develop under the AI Humanitiy umbrella.
CAIL will offer two types of AI training. Designed to support and connect all members of the Emory University, Atlanta, and Georgia communities, CAIL will offer year-round workshops and short courses teaching everything from basic AI literacy skills to the most advanced techniques. This programming serves staff members looking to use basic AI tools in university day-to-day operations, students wanting supplemental education in AI, and faculty looking to enhance their courses and research. These shared training experiences will add to the growing interdisciplinary AI network across campus.
We desire a leading scholar who works in professional Data Science engagement, responsible AI, or other fields concerned with the implications of artificial intelligence in public and private settings. Teaching opportunities for interested candidates will be considered.
The CAIL Director will be responsible for:
Overseeing daily operations
Directing the planning, development, and implementation of CAIL programs
