This part-time Research Assistant I will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory in compliance with University Safety Protocols and performing experiments under supervision. Duties will include maintain bacterial cultures, experiments on bacteria, and ordering of specialty items. This position will be for 15 hours/week. The Research Assistant I will also be responsible for making solutions & media, and conducting computerized data analyses under supervision.
The Department of Biological Sciences is currently chaired by Brandt Eichman and has an excellent staff to facilitate issue resolution involving personnel, financial management, supply and equipment orders proposal submission, and infrastructure. The faculty in the department carry out diverse research projects and often collaborate with other members within the department and in nearby departments.
The Department of Biological Sciences covers a broad spectrum of biology, from molecules and cells to tissues and organisms to populations and ecosystems. Award-winning faculty and graduate students teach and carry out research in Biochemistry, Structural Biology and Biophysics, Cell Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Computational Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, Developmental Biology, and Neurobiology.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under supervision, run experiments/assays, analyze data, and record results
Read and follow experimental protocols
Compile and communicate results to supervisor
Maintain and transfer bacterial cultures
Follow University safety protocols
Perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions
Prepare and operate equipment in experimental procedures under supervision:
May include PCR cycler, centrifuge, pH meter, spectrophotometer, autoclave, electrophoresis unit, analytical balance, etc.
Maintain and operate equipment according to manufacturer and university guidelines
Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments:
Maintain inventories and chemical lists
Maintain sterile conditions as required
Clean equipment, defrost freezers/refrigerators
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
A Bachelor's Degree is necessary.
Laboratory experience, especially with bacterial growth and maintenance is preferred, but not required.
