The position provides part time employment (8-16 hours/week) during the semester. The student will work under close supervision within the ALS-U engineering group and participate in the engineering effort to upgrade the Advanced Light Source.
The student's work focus will vary depending on their skills and interests. Students that are interested in creating technical documents and in QA and manufacturing process development will be directed towards this kind of work. Students that are more interested in CAD and design work will work on project geared towards design, large assemblies, and manufacturing drawings. The student will have ample opportunities to get trained in the specific engineering tools used at LBNL and that will be necessary to your work.
The ALS is a dynamic national scientific user facility that provides thousands of scientists from around the world access to bright beams of x-rays, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light for scientific studies and technology development in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. What You Will Do:
Assist with the development of quality assurance documents such as Work Instructions, Test Plans.
Work with mechanical design models to extract images to illustrate procedures in Work Instructions.
Assist with the development of project documentation, convert the existing documents to XML file.
May assist in assembling and document as-built documentation.
Perform 3D modeling and design work using Creo Parametric CAD software.
Convert the 3D model to 2D engineering drawings.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Assist with other engineering work related to the Advanced Light Source Upgrade project.
Assist with the development of engineering work process and documentation.
What is Required:
Full-time student in good standing during the semester enrolled in an engineering program or similar technical program.
Basic understanding of engineering principles.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Doc platform.
Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to make clear presentations.
Familiarity with mechanical CAD modeling (experience with mechanical CAD models preferred).
Curiosity and willingness to learn!
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Technical writing experience.
XML file experience.
Understanding of databases and database development.
Basic understanding of Quality Assurance principles.

This is a part-time 1-year student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
Part-time, Monday to Friday, 8 to 16 hours per week during the semester, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime.
Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.
