Detailed Job Description
This position is responsible for providing scientific research expertise for AMPrint Center research-related activities associated with new and on-going funded program activities as well as applied and fundamental scientific research. This position conducts high quality scientific research, then converts those findings into publications for peer-reviewed journals, presentations at national conferences, preparation of patent disclosures/applications, and dissemination through sponsor reports and/or briefings. This position contributes to the planning for future directives on research projects, and it includes proposal preparation activities. This position will be responsible for serving as a project team leader of other group personnel; it will provide mentorship to staff, graduate, and undergraduate students; it will compile research findings for dissemination activities; and it will make recommendations for future work based on research results.
Conceive of, design, and build new/novel additive manufacturing processes, and modify or enhance the functionality of existing additive manufacturing techniques. Classes of AM processes include, but are not limited to, photopolymerization, material jetting, material extrusion, and binder jetting.
Conduct applied research in support of funded research projects with specific focus on ability to advance device or prototype demonstrations in support of project objectives and deliverables. Ability to manage sponsor relationships including a responsibility for handling data and reports per federal contract(s) as well as confidential/proprietary information from commercial partners.
Disseminate new research findings to the field by publishing peer-reviewed literature, presenting findings at national conferences, and preparing patent disclosures/applications. Develop models to explain novel research findings by utilizing research theories and principles.
Function as team lead and support group on funded research projects to monitor/coordinate task progress, analyze technical results, summarize research findings in technical reports/briefings, and provide recommendations for future work based on research findings; while ensuring all report and deliverable deadlines are met. Contribute to white paper and proposal preparation, and engage in sponsor visits through briefings and tours to secure new and follow-on funding. Demonstrate ability to coordinate lead and support effort on multiple research projects, simultaneously.
Mentor group members on lab best practices, provide technical training on specific projects, and provide feedback when appropriate to colleagues on written works, including manuscript preparation, conference abstracts, proceedings, and oral presentations.
Assist in procurement of lab equipment and develop power user proficiency on group's laboratory equipment, and when appropriate, create and maintain comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be used in training of faculty, staff, and students. Troubleshoot and coordinate instrument maintenance and repair either with Center Director or vendor directly. Ensure lab safety protocols are in place and being practiced among group and coordinate with environmental health and safety (EH&S) when appropriate for chemical handling, waste, and other equipment inspection.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors of Science in Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related technical field.
5+ years direct experience in a research lab setting with experience in electromechanical systems integration and programming.
An understanding of basic manufacturing process physics.
Proficiency with microcontroller hardware integration and programming.
Experience in supporting multiple projects simultaneously and adaptability with shifting priorities to meet competing deadlines.
Ability to work autonomously and in concert with team members at all academic levels.
Proficiency in both written and oral communication at all institutional levels and with external collaborators.
Masters of Science in Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related technical field.
Demonstration of authorship of peer-reviewed journal papers and experience presenting at conferences.
